Natural ways to stay healthy this winter

With winter in full swing, and Christmas just a week away (!!!) I’m not sure about you, but I’m trying my hardest to stay healthy ahead of the big day. Most year’s I seem to catch a pretty bad cold that just knocks me for six. But not this year. This year (touch wood) I’ve managed to fight off the cold. But it’s not been easy. Like most of you, I work in an office that is filled with people coughing, sneezing and just generally spreading their germs around. But it’s not just my fellow colleagues I’m trying to avoid, there’s also the issue of not knowing what germs you could catch on public transport. But I’ve been trying my hardest to stay healthy and wanted to share with you all the natural ways to stay healthy this winter:

Drinking water 

We all know that drinking water is an important part of staying healthy. But I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t get anywhere near the recommended eight glasses. But since I got a FitBit last month I’ve been making a conscious effort to drink more, as you can track it on the app. And I have to say I’m starting to feel the benefits. My skin is looking better and I’m feeling better for it.

Eat healthier 

I know this might seem obvious, but when you’re diet is good, you feel good. I don’t know about everyone else but when I’ve been eating a lot of fast processed food, I don’t feel great. I feel sluggish and that’s normally when I find myself feeling a little under the weather. But when I’ve been eating a lot of fresh food I feel a lot better. I have more energy and feel like whatever germ I might catch, I can definitely fight it off!


Just like the diet, when I’m sticking to an exercise routine I feel a lot better. Not just about myself, but in general. I feel fitter, healthier and that I can fight off any bug or germ that comes my way. For me, running is my exercise of choice. I can do it before work and it can be done within 30 minutes. I also try and do a boxercise class once a week. Although it’s after work and harder to commit to, it’s a great way to let out my aggression and spend an hour sweating out any germs.

Up the sleep 

Just like the diet and exercise, when I’m not in a good sleep routine, I find I’m more likely to pick up a bug or two. And when I’m not sleeping well. The first thing I do is stop going to the gym and relying on fast processed food to get me through the day. It’s a vicious cycle, which is why sleep is so well at keeping you healthy.

    Some great tips! I need to do more of these 🙂 It’s great you’ve found exercise that suits you. I try to walk at least half an hour a day as I like it most. I also hope to take up yoga again x

    It’s not easy this time of year. Bad weather, lack of sunlight and low motivation make exercising difficult, and all I want is ALL the carbs, lol!

    I’ve only been getting a couple of hours sleep a night this year thanks to my 3 year old son, and I’ve found I’ve been ill every few weeks. I really need to try and get him back into a better routine again next year. All your tips are fab and I agree with all of them 🙂
